BIOGRAPHY
November 2010 sees the release of Greg's second solo work, 'Held Back the Sun'. This EP follows Greg's 2008 debut album, 'The Four Day Weeks of April'. Produced by ex-Thirsty Merc guitarist Sean Carey, the EP's songs are raw and honest reflections on life, love, and pain. The organic, acoustic production highlights the songs as stories - stories of the battles we all face, but sometimes struggle to communicate, let alone confront.
Greg has been working in the Sydney music scene since 1998. From that year, at the age of 15, Greg was the guitarist and backing vocalist for Sydney-based band Citizen. The band released its debut EP, ‘Distance Between Strangers’, in 2000 to wide acclaim, and received rotation on Triple J.
Following Citizen’s demise in 2001, Greg teamed up with his brother James to form the acoustic duo Somehow, recording with producers David Carr (Taxiride, Antiskeptic) and Michael McGlynn (Nathan Tasker, Ross Nobel), whilst performing at some of Sydney’s most loved venues, including The Basement and The Hopetoun. Since then, Greg has worked extensively as a session guitarist, singer, and saxophonist in both studio and live settings with acts such as Revive (with producer David Nicholas [The Veronicas, George, The Whitlams]) and Amanda Easton (with producer Michael Carpenter [Youth Group, 78 Saab]).
Greg also continues to record and perform his own compositions with Christian worship band Garage Hymnal (www.garagehymnal.com). Having played together since 2005, Garage Hymnal has spent much of 2010 touring Australia's eastern seaboard, and receives regular rotation on Hope 103.2. 2011 will see the band enter the studio to record their fifth studio album.
In 2007, Greg recorded his first solo album with producers Michael Carpenter and Matt Fell (Sara Storer, Troy Cassar-Daley, Butterfly 9, Tania Bowra). The album was released in early 2008 at a wonderful sold-out launch party at Sydney's Bridge Hotel, and saw Greg perform to other fantastic audiences at venues such as The Vanguard.
Greg’s songs drip with honesty and hope, ranging from dark, melancholic ballads, to driving, optimistic pop rock. He finds true beauty in the heartache and joy that come from a well-crafted melody. Greg is influenced by great songwriters of our time, including the Finn Brothers, John Mayer, Bic Runga, Diesel, and Brooke Fraser. Yet having trained classically on instruments such as piano and saxophone, Greg’s music is also infused with glorious moments that reflect his deep love of orchestral music. He can’t wait to share his songs with the ears of the world.
